![]() Profile of Haiti Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere - 80% of the population live in extreme poverty. Two-thirds of the population are dependent on agriculture which is chiefly made up of subsistence farming. After the troubled and corrupt legislative elections of 2000, most countries ceased aid to Haiti which had a negative impact on the local economy. Inflation is high and there is little or no investment in country. Civil unrest resulted from the resignation of President Aristide in 2004. Viatores Christi members in Haiti There are three members of Viatores Christi on mission in Haiti: Adele Lawlor from Dublin, is working with Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs in the capital, Port au Prince, and Catherine Behan and Maria O'Donovan are working with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul throughout the country. |
