Assignments

Viatores Christi requires all our trainees to undergo garda vetting. 

Thanks to the generosity of Irish Aid, Viatores Christi provides our volunteers with funding for the duration of their assignment.  In addition, if taking a career break from the public service, pension contributions are covered for up to two years.  Also, the Department of Family and Social Affairs pays social contributions for up to five years. 

 

Viatores Christi is a signatory to Comhlamh's Code of Good Practice. 

Some of our current requests for personnel are as follows:

Administrator/Accountant needed: A health centre in Makondo, Uganda has a number of projects attached to it (Curative Services, Mother and Child Care, Palliative Care Services for people living with HIV and AIDS and counselling.  Attached to the Health Centre is a Community Based Health Care which supports the communities with construction of latrines, training health volunteers and income generating activities especially for youth and women.  A nursery school which is meant for orphans and vulnerable children has about 160 children whose ages are between three and six years.  Children are given a meal per day. 

The person is required to co-ordinate the smooth running of each day. 

CONSTRUCTION/ELECTRONIC:

Work for builders, all the building trades in supporting the construction of classroom blocks and other support buildings (kitchens etc) for a programme that trains counsellors and provides a number of vital services in this area in Uganda. 

Specific needs: Young builders.

                         An accountant

A carpenter is needed for a training school in Oyo state in Nigeria.  We also have a request for a carpenter to work in a school in Lusaka, Zambia. 

Grenada, West Indies: our mission partner needs a volunteer with 'some form of skill that can be passed on to prisoners or potential prisoners - carpentry, small appliance repairs, computer repairs, auto mechanics.

MEDICAL:

Tanzania

Nurse needed for a very poor area about one hour from Shinyanga town. 

At another mission site in North Eastern Tanzania, a hospital has expressed a need for an administrator with accounting experience.  Preferably somebody with hospital or health institution experience.  This would suit a couple.

Zambia

A therapist with experience in addiction is required to work in a Drug and Alcohol Unit in Lusaka. 

This same unit has a need for an administrator also. 

Uganda:

Two Counsellor Training Institutes have expressed a need for psychologists or social workers with some experience to teach the syllabus and to teach research methods.

One of these institutes has also expressed an urgent need for an administrator.

Peru

This charity, set up by an Irish man is based in a shanty town in the North of Lima.  It provides a number of services to reduce poverty in the community, including the building of dining rooms where poor families can have breakfast and lunch; creches where mothers can leave their children while they work part time; classes in adult education; after school clubs where kids can stay while their parent is working and craft classes which can become micro businesses. 

In addition there is a therapy centre for children and adults with physical and intellectual disability. 

The charity has a need for two volunteer personnel: an administrator to co-ordinate and support the various services and a person with a background in social science, psychology or community development. 

For both roles, it is necessay to be person centred and community centred, ensuring that the communities with greatest needs are supported, where practical.

A second mission partner working in various locations in Peru has expressed a need for personnel to work in services caring for children, special needs and the elderly.  People with a medical background (eg physio and occupational therapists, intellectual disability nurses, speech and language therapists, teachers/therapists of movement-dance, mental health workers), community workers, youth workers, promoters of womens rights, teachers of English/music/art all needed.  Please email colette@viatoreschristi.com for more details.   

 

South Africa

One of our mission partners in South Africa working in the areas of education, day care and nutrition of children (including AIDS orphans), identifying and supporting families affected by HIV/AIDS have the following volunteer needs:

(1)  Social worker/counsellor to support a number of schools in Port Elizabeth;

(2)  A RE (Religious Education) Co-ordinator: to monitor and support the RE programme (which is not specifically Catholic but includes a lot of Christian morality);

(3)  A person is required to look after a nutrition centre near Grahamstown (a nice university town), using creative ways to look after children and help them with their homework.  You need to have an interest in education, including teaching life skills.  High unemployment in Grahamstown.

According to another project sponsored by the Irish Government, working in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal provinces, South Africa expects to have more than two million HIV AIDS Orphans by 2012.  This project has a number of creches and small group homes for the children.  They are looking for a mature woman, if possible a social worker or someone with experience in a similar field (experience with and a love of children).  Religion is not an issue as they are non-denominational. 

Ethiopia:

A Project Manager, required for a project that assists the poor especially those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and helps the poor women to help themselves, to live life as fully as possible.  This role has a lot of scope including offering support in coming to terms with the reality of living with AIDS.  Desirable skills include computer literacy and managerial experience (optional).

Teachers:

Zambia

A group committed to the poor and to women in rural areas, is currently building a preschool, in Mazabuka.  They are looking for a preschool teacher for January 2011.  Initially, there will be approx 30 children in the school.

El Salvador

In a rural region in El Salvador where people are still traumatised by the war and coping with the aftermath of the hurricane last year (2009), there is a need for English teachers to work in schools with the poorest children.  Currently, there are three Viatores Christi volunteers working there.  Necessary to have Spanish.  It is possible to spend a few weeks in language school in nearby Guatemala, if your Spanish needs improvement.

Teacher training college in Ghana looking for degree holders to teach English, Maths and Science.  This mission partner also has a need for a Primary teacher in a kindergarten/primary school or a sutably qualified teacher for a junior secondary school.

English teacher to work with adults in a Counsellor Training Institure in Uganda. 

Tanzania: English teacher needed for a vocational school in a lovely area (Lushoto).  In a separate region (where there have been many expats), a computer teacher is required for a secondary school.

St Vincent, West Indies: Biology, Chemistry and IT teachers needed. 

Male teacher(s), Maths, Science and English required for a junior secondary school, Nigeria - additional skills eg agriculture, building and sports welcome.  Would suit trained teacher/graduate. 

In Grenada, West Indies, a volunteer needed to do remedial work in primary schools, Spirituality in secondary schools.
