Viatores Christi requires all our trainees to undergo garda vetting.

Thanks to the generosity of Irish Aid, Viatores Christi provides our volunteers with funding for the duration of their assignment. In addition, if taking a career break from the public service, pension contributions are covered for up to two years. Also, the Department of Family and Social Affairs pays social contributions for up to five years.

TRADES/AGRICULTURE/CONSTRUCTION/ELECTRONIC:

Haiti: A contracting background with basic principles in electrical, carpentry, plumbing etc for this hospital in the North of Haiti. Ideally for someone with a civil engineering background to work side by side with Haitian staff. See www.crudem.org

Nigeria: A carpenter is needed for a training school in Oyo state. This same mission partner has expressed a need for volunteers to train young people in the area of agriculture: farming, poultry and fishery.

Grenada, West Indies: In 2011, Grenada has 45% unemployment. If you would like to be involved in a skills training programme working with a prison population, half of whom are under 25, who are school dropouts and lack social skills and attitudes that would help find jobs, this could be for you! Carpentry, small appliance repairs, computer repairs, auto mechanics etc.

ADMINISTRATIVE/PROPOSAL WRITING/FUNDRAISING

Uganda: At a Counsellor Training Institute, in Mbarara, there is a need for a trained librarian. They also have a need for a volunteer - even for a few months - to train a programme co-ordinator for the overall programme (which includes the counselling training, a tailoring school and a school sponsorship programme.)

MEDICAL:

Tazania: Nurse requested to work in a dispensary providing primary health care to the surrounding population in North Central Tanzania (Bariadi District). Our mission partner also works in collaboration with the local Ministry of Health to coordinate a HIV and AIDS programme. January 2011

Also in Tanzania (in Bugisi), there is a desperate and real need to set up a small physio unit in the health centre/mini-hospital to train one or two locals in the basics of physio so as they will know what to do in emergency situations and how best to care for the people in need of such treatment. Therefore, we have a request for a physiotherapist. Although this is a remote area, it is well connected with the bigger towns Shinyanga and Mwanza by good roads etc.

Haiti: A hospital looking for medical staff in the North of the country. It is responsible for serving 225,000 people with outpatient clinics, maternity, paediatrics, a pharmacy and laboratory, nutrition centre and community health projects. See www.crudem.org

Uganda: Two Counsellor Training Institutes have expressed needs for psychologists and social workers with some experience to teach the syllabus and to teach research methods.

Peru: A mission partner working in various locations in Peru has expressed a need for personnel to work in services caring for children, special needs and the elderly. People with a medical background (eg physio and occupational therapists, intellectual disability nurses, speech and language therapists, teachers/therapists of movement-dance, mental health workers), community workers, youth workers, promoters of womens rights, teachers of English/music/art all needed.

Teachers:

Teacher training college in Ghana looking for degree holders (with an awareness of classroom management) to teach English, Maths and Science. This mission partner also has a need for a Primary teacher in a kindergarten/primary school or a sutably qualified teacher for a junior secondary school.

Nigeria: Teachers required for both primary and secondary schools, Oyo State.

India: An Irish missionary congregation working in the Tamil Nadu region has expressed a need for teachers, both primary and secondary (English, IT, carpentry, metal work etc). They are also open to accommodating volunteers in other fields also.

Volunteer with excellent computer skills required to assist at radio/tv dvd production studios, Copperbelt region, Zambia. The focus of the programmes is social issues and education of the poorest people especially in the shanty townships; also plan to cover the influence of witchcraft and its effects on society and the need for improvements in the vital services such as hospitals, schools, sanitation and the environment. Training courses in dvd/film production is also involved so teaching skills is an added requirement.
